J’ai parfois l’impression de ne pas aimer l’Espagne, mais je pense que c’est un endroit sympa où vivre et mourir. Mais c’est pas endroit où évoluer. En Espagne, tout va trop lentement. En plus maintenant, on n’a plus d’argent alors les clubs et les galeries ne prennent pas le risque de montrer de nouveaux artistes. Dans certains clubs en Espagne, si tu veux jouer, tu dois payer. On vit en ce moment une sale période pour l’art et les artistes. Je remercie sincèrement tous les gens qui ne sont pas en Espagne qui aiment ce que je fais et qui veulent me voir faire des concerts. Creo que la música me ha sido esencial siempre, directamente e indirectamente. Es una de esas cosas de la vida de las cuales no puedes tener ningún tipo de queja. Eso es adorable. Empecé sin darme cuenta, la verdad. Muy joven. Poco a poco fui introduciéndome y ahora me encuentro metido hasta el cuello. Espero saber nadar hasta la orilla. ¿Tuviste algún ídolo musical en tu infancia? De pequeño recuerdo lo justo. No te voy a engañar como mucha gente que conozco, diciéndote que tuve uno en concreto. Unos cuantos discos de heavy metal de mi padre y el grande y soñador álbum de la película 'Grease'. Eso es de lo poco que recuerdo ahora mismo. Tu disco favorito anterior a 1990, y el de 1990 hasta hoy. Creo que el álbum “Lie” de Charles Manson es de las cosas más sinceras que he oído en mi vida. Luego algo más actual, diría que... Beck y Ween de todos los tiempos. Adoro la discografía entera. Me considero un gran admirador de ambos. Cuéntanos algo curioso que te haya pasado en alguno de tus viajes por Europa. Creo que lo más interesante de mis viajes es que aún no asimilo todo lo que estoy haciendo. Rap, rock n’ roll, like Tupac, The Nerves, Troy Pierce. I think, it’s more about specific genres, because every song is mine, and every song sounds different, and if influenced by different styles and stuff, but some musicians are so special to me, from Beck, Hansen. What makes you sad? Some people, the way they act and that controlled and sick world. Vous croyez en moi et je crois en vous! Sutja Gutiérrez n’existe pas. C’est juste un gars qui veut partager toutes ses créations avec le monde entier. Je me fous de ce qu’on peut penser de moi, je prends juste l’amour que m’offrent mes fans! Je suis d’ailleurs très heureux d’avoir tous ces fans qui me soutiennent. Tu viens d’achever ta tournée française, comment as tu été reçu par le public français? La France est un pays génial. Les gens ici sont tellement agréables et sympas avec moi. Même dans mon pays d’origine qui est l’Espagne, je n’ai pas un retour aussi positif. Ou du moins pas pour le moment… C’est triste mais il s’agit pourtant de la vérité. L’Espagne n’est pas prête pour Sutja Gutiérrez. J’ai beaucoup écouté ton dernier EP White Ponycorn In My Room, il est très bon comme toutes tes productions d’ailleurs! C’était avec “Ah, No” que j’avais commencé à écouter ta musique. Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire dans l’écriture et la composition de tes titres? Merci, je suis content que ça t’ait plu! Je ne sais pas vraiment qui est ma muse ou ma source d’inspiration… Peut-être que c’est moi? Ma vie, l’endroit où je vis, le moment présent. Le moment présent est très important pour moi. Je vis chaque moment à fond. Les paroles de ma chanson “Ah, No” disent “my country has nothing to say”, “I don’t like bad girls”, “people love to talk about you”. Tout ça correspondait au moment présent (ou plutôt passé, enfin vous voyez ce que je veux dire, ndlr). C’est aussi simple que ça. En lisant ta biographie, j’ai été surpris de voir que tu te produisais parfois en tant que DJ. Comment as-tu amené à faire ce boulot? En gardes tu un bon souvenir? Est-ce que l’ambiance des soirées dans lesquelles tu te produisais n’était pas trop différente de ton univers? La vie nocturne est très différente; j’aime faire la fête, rencontrer des gens. Mais l’opinion qu’on se fait des gens est un peu différente quand ton meilleur ami s’appelle “Alcool”. Dans la vie de tous les jours, on rencontre des gens qui craignent tout le temps mais avec l’alcool, c’est encore pire. C’est vraiment triste. J’ai été DJ à une période de ma vie mais je ne le suis plus car le milieu de la nuit est un milieu à la fois très intense et également très faux. Trop pour moi en tout cas. Il m’arrive de faire le DJ en soirée pour gagner un peu d’argent (cela m’a permis de m’acheter un ordinateur portable, des synthés, etc) ou pour promouvoir ma musique. C’était dans le but d’évoluer, comme tout ce que je fais en général. J’ai lu dans plusieurs interviews de toi que tu ne te considérais pas comme un “vrai” musicien. Pourquoi ça? Est-ce que c’est la raison pour laquelle tu as choisi de diffuser ta musique gratuitement? Je ne veux pas me considérer comme un musicien parceque je n’aime pas les musiciens. Ils sont un peu comme les DJ et évoluent aussi souvent dans le milieu de la nuit; c’est un peu pareil pour moi. Je suis quelqu’un qui aime créer; peu-être que demain je voudrais être photographe ou bien réalisateur de films. On verra bien ce qui se passe mais s’il vous plaît, ne me dites pas que je suis un musicien. Ma musique est gratuite pour le moment mais peut-être que mon futur album sera vendu par un bon label qui croit en moi (ou pas). Je ne sais pas vraiment, je n’ai pas de grandes ambitions. Je me contente de vivre ma vie et de faire le hustler tous les jours! Je ne sais pas si tu le sais mais le buzz autour de ta musique a été relayé par les deux médias les plus influents en matière de musique indie en France (les Inrocks et Magic, ndlr). Comment est-ce que tu as ressenti cela? Ça me fait tellement plaisir. L’équipe de Magic est un peu comme une seconde famille pour moi et j’en suis très fier. Je ne connais pas très bien les journalistes des Inrocks, mais ils sont adorables de m’avoir consacré des articles sur leur blog. Merci à eux! Beaucoup de personnes parlent de moi, mais d’autres ignorent mes mails et ceux de mon manager parceque je ne suis pas Lana Del Rey. C’est pas grave, un jour c’est eux qui vont me courir après mais j’en aurai rien à foutre. Tu parlais tout à l’heure du manque de retour de la part du public espagnol. Comment est-ce que ta musique a été accueillie là bas? Ma musique ne fonctionne pas très bien parcequ’ici, en Espagne, ça prend beaucoup de temps pour qu’une musique ait du succès (à part la musique commerciale, le flamenco ou l’electro tendance de merde). Peut-être qu’un jour, ma musique aura du succès ici, mais on ne peut pas trop savoir. Je préfère me produire en dehors de l’Espagne de toute façon, c’est mieux pour moi et mon évolution personnelle. Je suis récemment tombé sur une photo de Lana Del Rey sur ton tumblr (qui m’a bien fait rire), sur laquelle on pouvait lire “I fucked Sutja”. Est-ce une manière pour toi de te moquer du buzz soudain qu’il y a eu autour de sa musique? Est-ce que tu aimes ce qu’elle fait? Je n’aime qu’une seule de ses chansons, celle qui s’appelle “Kill Kill”. Je n’aime pas le reste parcequ’elle parle trop de choses tendance dans ses chansons. Les gens vont bientôt voir cette fille comme la nouvelle Amy Winehouse et je trouve ça triste. Lana, si tu lis cette interview sache que les gens t’aiment alors j’espère que tu m’aimeras aussi un jour. Les gens aiment parler les uns des autres; c’est la vie. Les gens aiment parler de conneries, comme de tes lèvres ou encore de ma… (hum). Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur ton premier album, Cult And Truth? Vers quel genre de musique vas tu t’orienter? Cult And Truth sera mon premier album (electronique hi-fi, voix lo-fi). Les chansons qui sont sur le net ne sont que des démos enregistrées dans ma chambre. L’album a été enregistré en deux étapes: dans un premier temps, moi tout seul dans ma chambre et dans un second temps, avec le fantastique artiste electro Affkt qui a passé beaucoup de temps avec moi à réenregistrer chaque morceau en studio. Ce sera plus électro que ce que j’ai l’habitude de faire. Peut-être que le suivant sera plus rock ou plus folk, je ne sais pas. Cet album est en train de me rendre dingue mais j’en suis fier. Je suis également fier de travailler avec Affkt, c’est un gars tellement sympa. Est-ce que tu comptes travailler sur de nouveaux morceaux avec The Fruhstucks? Franchement, je ne sais pas du tout… On parlait tout à l’heure de Lana Del Rey; quels sont les artistes dont la musique te plaît actuellement? We all eventually sell our best moments and, by telling you my story, my purpose is no other that making you live a bittersweet and sincere experience. I’ve had some problems in the course of my life (kleptomaniac, sex-obsessed, depressive, bipolar, etc.) I’m the only one who knows Sutja Gutiérrez. Sometimes, when I was a child, I would steal things to have what I couldn’t have. I wanted to be a sort of Robin Hood for myself, but then I realised that being materialistic sucks and I started seeing things in a different way. However, I would steal now nothing but your soul. I've lived in different places. I've spent most of my life in Vinaroz. Quite an experience, since it’s a small place full of characters and, all things considered, quite typical people. Every morning I made music with my computer. I tried to form a band, but I wasn't able until I moved down to Castelló. Once in Castelló, I worked as a DJ at most of the clubs whose music criteria were far from commercial stuff. That cheered me up somehow. In the end it all was the very same shit. It just became a frontline job that I don’t really appreciate any more as much as I used to. I could even say that I hate it. I don’t even appreciate being a DJ any longer either. In fact, I’ve never called myself a DJ and I hate people who do so. It sucks. Plus, to some extent, many club owners, promoters and other people only interested in money, have done with me whatever they wanted. I just want to tell them that Sutja Gutiérrez has no owner. Absolutely none. I started looking for musicians wherever I lived. Some contributed to my experience, but some snatched me what I appreciate the most in this life. Creativity. We all have our own creativity flow, and it is not until you share it with others that they modify it their way. And that's what they'll do until they are satisfied. I wasn’t prepared for that. That’s how I decided to start over on my own and I created “The Fruhstucks”. It all started with a guitarist and a drummer. Then I stopped playing with the drummer. Eventually I did the same with that guitarist I had. Miguel Camara joined “The Fruhstucks” and together we released the first EPs “Parade, I Don't Care”, “Even If You Lose Yourself” and a vinyl with the record label Race Car (USA), “Sorry, We Are The Fruhstucks”. The Fruhstucks ended like one of those dreams, when one wakes with a great startle. I was nice while it lasted. It will be nice while it lasts. I played a role at a short film entitled Atlas, by Raquel Melián. Shot in Lanzarote, it was a great experience in my life. I met wonderful people and loved acting. At the moment, I’m working on my own and everything you see, hear or read is done by me, processed by me and minutely analysed by me. It is unique, very personal and worthy of all of you. Two small albums “White Ponycorn In My Room” / “Sutja Gutiérrez Original Soundtrack” three EPs “The Way I Feel” / “We Know” / “Trendy Rock Hits” and nice songs like “I Can See The Devil”, “Like Always ft. Aurore Imbert Of Dawn” and “Death Is My Lover, Life Is Your Wife” were released completely for free and helped me to reach everything I´ve reached up to today. Now i'm recording my new debut album called “Cult And Truth”. “Cult and Truth” will be something like a nice psychedelic/electronic trip. I am currently working as a vocalist too with the best electronic producers from Spain like Affkt, Edu Imbernon, Coyu,... You can listen to me around the world. My music was played at the MTV (Visit Malta Spot), the Newport Beach Film Festival, Max Azria opening BCBG (New York).… I’ve appeared in numerous friendly and incredible blogs/magazines/sites around the world — Magicrpm, Les Inrocks, Absolut Network, Guerolito Music, Matinee as Hell, Wild Magazine, … and many more. I do more than music and I am not a musician; I don’t even want to be one. I’ll show you step by step how to destroy your mind, your soul and your creativity, reaching a climax you’d never imagined before. Appreciate it, follow me and nourish my story.
